Designing a communication board and a Social Story for advocates to use with residents is an impactful project!
To better understand communication challenges, we would like to ask a variety of questions that cover different aspects of experiences and needs.
This information will guide us in selecting the most appropriate communication symbols for the board and may also provide insights on content to include in the Social Story.
What is your main goal when meeting with a resident?
How do most residents prefer to communicate?
For example, speaking, writing, gestures
What questions do you ask residents?
For example:
Do you have any preferred languages or dialect?
Do you have any difficulties with hearing or vision that affects communication?
Do you use a communication aid/device? For example; hearing aid
Do you have any challenges/limitations that make it hard to speak or write? For example; stroke, Parkinsons
How do you feel when communicating with others? For example; frustrated, anxious, nervous
Is there are a place where you find it easier to communicate?
Are there any cultural considerations we should be aware of when communicating? For example; eye contact, personal space, gender roles
Are there any specific people who assist you with communication? For example, family members, caregivers.
As an advocate, what is your greatest challenge when communicating with a resident?
What resources/tools do you currently use to explain to resident what your role is?
If you have previously used communication boards, what did you like or dislike about them?
How many symbols do you think would be ideal on a communication board?
For example, 10 - 14 symbols
No more than 20 symbols
What size board would you prefer?
For example A4
If you have previously used Social Stories, what did you like or dislike about them?
