How to Obtain an MLAK Key
Access Ability Australia is very proud to be working with Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia (MLAA) to bring you convenient information on the Master Locksmiths Access Key “MLAK”.
The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) system is an MLAA initiative that is a unique and innovative system that uses a universal lock and key to allow people with disabilities to access dedicated public facilities 24 hours a day. It was developed to help increase the availability of accessible, clean and functioning public facilities for people with disability.
Since the launch, the MLAK system has been widely used throughout Australia. It has been installed at railway stations, accessible toilets in council facilities, national parks and major sporting grounds and shopping centres, as well as adaptive playground equipment such as the Liberty Swing which allows access for wheelchair users.
With approximately 90 Changing Places facilities within Australia and many more on their way, Australia is the first country in the world to mandate a new class of toilets in the Australian building codes. As of 1 May 2019, accessible adult change facilities will be required for some buildings in the National Construction Code 2019.
Some of our Access Keys include a dedicated page to facilities that are MLAK enabled. This may include a Changing Places facility or a Liberty Swing. To enhance the Access Key user experience, we will now be including convenient information and links on how you can obtain an MLAK so visits can be seamless and dignified.
Eligibility for an MLAK key is restricted to people with special needs or their carer, disability organisations, community health centres and owners/managers of a building or facility with an MLAK enabled toilet, a Changing Places facility or a Liberty Swing on site.
Facilities that are MLAK-enabled can be visually identified by dedicated MLAK signage. These signs usually feature the unique shape of the MLAK key head.
MLAK keys are available for purchase from the National Support Office of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLAA) or from many MLAA Business Members.
