AAA Network member, Knox Leisureworks, has come together with Different Journeys and Knox City Council, to bring you Autism Family Swim Nights.

Autism Family Swim Nights at Knox Leisureworks are open for all ages to come together and socialise in a safe, friendly and supportive environment.

Different Journeys specialises in helping autistic individuals and their families in a wraparound holistic support.

Different Journey events allow individuals to build transferrable skill sets such as communication skills, social skills, ability to maintain more meaningful relationships and skills to access the community. There are lots of ‘hidden rules’ when going out socially in public and Different Journeys aims to empower their Autistic community with the skills and knowledge by creating real events in a safe and supported environment to learn. Different Journey’s holistic wraparound approach enables carers to also build their networks, learn different approaches and learning to navigate the maze.

We are very pleased to announce the next Autism Family Swim Night at Knox Leisureworks will be taking place on December 5th at 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Knox Leisureworks will open exclusively for the autism community during these events. With the help of the Knox Leisureworks Access Key, participants can learn more about the suitability of this centre as well as the sensory elements of experiences from the comfort of their own home prior to attending.

The Knox Leisureworks Access Key is a customised accessibility guide that provides users with improved information about attending this centre.

The Knox Leisureworks Access Key includes professional photographs, contextualised supportive information, a visual Communication Board, sensory guides and a range of accessibility and safety features.

Access Keys help users understand what to expect from a specific experience before attending, help to determine the suitability of an experience, help to alleviate anxiety about visiting new places, support the interpretation of circumstances and process new concepts whilst in attendance and are also a great tool for fostering independence.

Access Keys are presented in a Portable Document Format (pdf). They are free of charge to download from our website library page. Access Keys can be printed. They are mobile responsive and can be downloaded and accessed on any mobile device, via our website.

For optimum outcomes and positive experiences, Access Keys are available online to help you prepare for your visit in advance. Full implementation guidelines are provided with every Access Key.

Events are open to all ages and are designed to provide a safe environment for all to come, have fun, connect with others and enjoy a bit of exercise. Participants meet at the swim centre, spend approximately 1 hour in the pool and then come together over a BBQ dinner. BBQ dinner included in the entry price.

Event can be claimed on NDIS plans if applicable.

These wonderful community programs and assets would not be possible without the support and assistance provided by Knox City Council. Access Ability Australia and Different Journeys would like to acknowledge and thank Knox City Council for their ongoing support in helping to make community more inclusive for all.

AAA look forward to continuing our work with Different to help ensure improvement to the work we do, aiming to support the whole of community to become more inclusive.
